What to do next.Having lost in Council, we are now forced to fight at the State Government level. It is important to write to Frank Sartor, Minster of Planning, and to the director of the State Heritage Office Reece McDougall. Sartor has promised protection for sensitive sites near the coast (SEPP 71) and our theater and adjoining land, surely fits that category. You don't have to argue the case eloquently, personal experiences and affection for the theatre, its place in our hearts and history, would be appropriate. The wording of the Minister's memo is vague. If you take overseas visitors there or can report other overseas feedback, that's good. Practical things to speak about are;
The Hon Frank Sartor The same content would work for Reece McDougall. Keep in mind council refused to heritage list the theatre at the local level in December 2002. This must irritate the State heritage office, since that is what they want to happen. They should not have to step in, the theatre being clearly of local heritage value, but they will have to now. We can ague that it has state heritage significance as well because it draws people from far and wide, even overseas. But the heritages aspects to stress are not so much the physical building, but the social aspects. The various events and "do's" which have charmed you. Mr. Reece McDougall Please send a copy of your letters to Mike Rubbo. Pres. The Theatre Trust, 135 Hillside Rd. Avoca beach NSW 2251. Our aim is for approx. 1000 letters by New Year to each man. For some points for discussion, if you want to argue the case in more detail, go to the THOUGHTS page of this web site. |
